Omayma Hamed (PHIL 2011) was recently invited to conduct a two-day workshop on management and leadership at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In developing the workshop, Dr. Hamed says that she called upon the knowledge, skills, and attitudes pertaining to leadership and management in education that she acquired during her FAIMER fellowship. To make the experience enjoyable for participants, she designed some hands-on activities and ice-breaking games that tied into the theme of the workshop.
On the first day, participants were asked to take the MBTI personality test to define their styles. These styles were used to help understand team building and optimizing the dynamics of a team by appropriately using the functional components of MBTI styles. They then moved on to a discussion of the concept of “Polarity Management” and appreciating the genius of the “AND.”
On the second day, participants evaluated their leadership skills in solving problems via a survey. They discussed the definition of a “crucial conversation,” utilized a poster to map a conflict, discussed appropriate strategies to resolve conflict, and demonstrated their understanding of a “third alternative” in conflict management. Dr. Hamed reports that she was pleased with how well the teams completed their final activity, focused on participatory planning, and says that the environment was full of positive energy and passion.
Dr. Hamed conducted this workshop on three separate occasions at KAU: in the Center for Teaching Learning Development on March 15-16, 2014; in the Medical Education Department on April 5-6, 2014; and in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities on April 29-30, 2014. She describes the experience as exemplifying the “ripple effect” of FAIMER.
