Congratulations to Dinesh Badyal (CMCL 2007, PHIL 2009), who conducted a one-day workshop entitled “Modernising Medical Training: Replacing Animals in M.B.B.S. Programmes” at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana (CMCL), India, on January 20, 2012. Sponsored by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA India) and the Medical Council of India (MCI), the workshop focused on the need for alternatives to animals in teaching and demonstrations of human-patient simulations. Dinesh demonstrated some of the interactive computer-simulated alternatives available in India for undergraduate teaching, and discussed how the alternatives were successfully implemented at CMCL. Other workshop speakers included Mohammad Akbarsha, Director and Chair of the Mahatma Gandhi-Dorenkamp Centre for Alternatives to Use of Animals in Life Science Education, Tiruchirappalli, India; and John Pawlowski, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and Director of Thoracic Anesthesia at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, United States.
The workshop represents one of the long-term outcomes of Dinesh’s CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute education innovation project.
