In May 2014, several FAIMER staff members were pleased to have an opportunity to meet with Bosede Afolabi (PHIL 2002) toward the end of her seven-week stay in the United States as an international Eisenhower Fellow. Dr. Afolabi was one of 24 individuals chosen for this highly competitive and intensive fellowship program, which is held in the spring and fall of each year. The fellowship began with a week of group leadership development seminars in Philadelphia, and the next six weeks were dedicated to individual fellowship experiences tailored to each fellow’s needs. Over the course of her fellowship, Dr. Afolabi studied hospital administration and financing, explored maternal care advocacy initiatives, and explored potential collaborations with sickle cell researchers. Her cohort met at the Grand Canyon for a few days partway through the fellowship experience, and then reconvened for their final week in Philadelphia, where fellows reported on what they had learned and the projects they planned to undertake upon returning home.
Dr. Afolabi is an Associate Professor at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and is internationally recognized for her research on sickle cell anemia. She is a member of the University of Lagos Medical Education Unit—which is headed by FAIMER Fellow Christy Okaromah (PHIL 2004)—and says that her participation in the FAIMER Institute helped crystalize her interest in making medical education a major part of her career.
