Madhuri Kanitkar Is Promoted to Lieutenant General, Indian Armed Forces

Congratulations to Madhuri Kanitkar (CMCL 2012), who was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, Indian Armed Forces. This historic promotion makes her the third woman officer and the first pediatrician to rise to the second-highest rank in the Indian Armed Forces. She was also recently nominated to the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC).

Dr. Kanitkar has a number of firsts to her credit as a woman. She was the first pediatric nephrologist of the Indian Army Medical Corps to set up facilities in Pune and Delhi; the first woman to serve as Dean at Armed Forces Medical College; and the first serving officer on the PM-STIAC and the Board of Governors, Medical Council of India. She was the first clinician in the Indian Army Medical Corps to complete a FAIMER fellowship, though many have since followed in her footsteps. She and her husband are also now the first couple in India to both reach the rank of Lieutenant General.

Dr. Kanitkar has served in the Indian military for 37 years. Her FAIMER project was titled "E-mentoring young pediatricians working in peripheral hospitals in the Armed Forces for continuous professional development.” Reflecting on her FAIMER fellowship, Dr. Madhuri shared, “My FAIMER experience has been the best thing that happened to me.
