Bangalore, India – As part of his fellowship activities, Dr. Waqar Naqvi is pleased to highlight the recent publication of their collaborative paper titled “Critical Thinking in the Age of Generative AI: Implications for Health Sciences Education” in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence (May 2025). This interdisciplinary opinion piece brings together thought leaders from the USA, UK, and India to examine the cognitive, ethical, and pedagogical implications of generative AI (genAI) in medical and health sciences education.
In this work, we critically assess the growing reliance on genAI for literature synthesis, clinical decision support, and assessment design, while raising caution against the risks of cognitive complacency, misinformation, and over-dependence on AI-generated outputs. Our analysis urges educational institutions and policy-makers to balance AI integration with human-centered critical thinking, ethical oversight, and the cultivation of scientific reasoning.
The paper also explores the concept of “augmented intelligence,” advocating for a responsible model of genAI use that supports—not replaces—human judgment. It emphasizes the need for institutional responsibility in training future clinicians and educators to critically appraise genAI outputs, ensuring safe and ethical application in practice.
The publication reinforces my fellowship’s central theme: advancing ethical, evidence-based integration of AI into medical education and practice. It complements my ongoing work on real-time evidence synthesis tools like Vivum.app and further amplifies our call for global standards and AI literacy in the health professions.
