Dr. Waqar M. Naqvi (IFI 2024) and his team explored how artificial intelligence is revealing unexamined assumptions in health professions education research in Medical Teacher

A recent publication in Medical Teacher (Taylor & Francis) explores an important question in health professions education: whether some widely accepted research practices may be shaped by assumptions that have not been critically examined.

"The research we never questioned: What artificial intelligence is revealing in health professions education?" by Waqar M. Naqvi (Qatar), Panayiota Senekkis-Florent (USA), Michael Rowe (United Kingdom), Leah Fabiano (USA), and Rohini Ganjoo (USA).

The work was conceptualized by Dr. Waqar M. Naqvi, an International FAIMER Fellow, and considers how generative artificial intelligence and autonomous systems are making visible underlying assumptions within health professions education research, including those related to evidence hierarchies, peer review, and scholarly outputs.

The paper describes two emerging responses to artificial intelligence: disclosure frameworks, which focus on reporting AI use, and formation frameworks, which consider whether researchers are prepared to critically engage with evolving knowledge systems. While disclosure has received considerable attention, the need to strengthen researcher formation remains an important area for further development.

The collaboration reflects international and interdisciplinary engagement, including FAIMER-linked mentorship, with Dr. Rohini Ganjoo contributing as co-author and mentor.

This work contributes to ongoing conversations on research integrity and the evolving role of artificial intelligence in shaping scholarship in health professions education.
