Associate Professor, IMU Centre for Education

International Medical University

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Growing up, Dr. P. Ravi Shankar had aspirations of becoming a theoretical astrophysicist due to his interest in researching the inner workings of the cosmos. Although he eventually became a medical doctor, the passion for research remained strong within him. Once he arrived at the Postgraduate Institute in Chandigarh, India, Dr. Shankar began testing the waters of research. Over time, he became involved in research related to drug utilization, medicine use in the community, rational use of medicines, and small group learning at the Manipal College of Medical Sciences. Dr. Shankar was able to collaborate with talented researchers, Dr. P. Subish and Dr. TS Chandrashekhar, to work on educational research. This collaboration continues even today, with Dr. Chandra being the lead author on Dr. Shankar's most cited article on student stress.

In 2007, Dr. Shankar joined the PSG-FAIMER Regional Institute, and his curriculum innovation project has been facilitating voluntary medical humanities modules for medical students for the past 15 years. Using literature excerpts, paintings, role-plays, and movies, he considers himself lucky to have made a contribution to the literature on the subject, from the perspective of developing nations. Before the COVID-19 Pandemic, Dr. Shankar facilitated workshops for students and faculty at different medical and health science universities in South India. As he continues his involvement with the health humanities at his current institution, Dr. Shankar looks forward to facilitating a forthcoming session for faculty on using movies in health professions education.
