Congratulations to Bineyam Taye (PHIL 2011) on the recent publication of the following article:

Taye B. Online discussion for block teaching in postgraduate health professionals’ curriculum: the Ethiopian experience. BMC Medical Education. 2014;14:29.

The article focuses on a study aimed at assessing the value of online discussions in supporting students’ engagement and interaction with their peers and teachers. The research was conducted at Addis Ababa University College of Health Sciences, which has structured its curriculum around intensive block teaching. Online discussions are a new approach in Ethiopia, and this was the first study in the Ethiopian context to assess students’ engagement and learning experience using this method of instruction. Two groups of postgraduate students enrolled in a Biostatistics and Research Methods module were included in the study. Results indicate that blended use of online discussion and face-to-face classroom teaching supports students’ engagement and interaction with their peers and teachers, and online discussion appears to be a valuable addition to an intensive block teaching postgraduate curriculum where learners are engaged in a full workload with academic studies.
