Chawla’s citation for the award, initiated by the Dean of Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, is based on work done in the field of medical education. An extract of his citation states that, “As Head of the Department of Physiology, [he] displayed unparalleled academic and professional brilliance and commitment of the highest order to reform medical education in India, bringing singular credit to the Armed Forces Medical Services.”
