Dr. Lena Jafri and Dr. Muhammed Tariq's received the Award for Collaborative Practices in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ACPSoTL) for their work in Promoting excellence in Chemical Pathology residency program. The award was accepted during the closing ceremony of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning UnConference at Aga Khan University on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. This was a competitive award was given by the Network of Quality, Teaching & Learning by the Office of the Provost of Aga Khan University.
The fundamental rationale of project was the provision of formative assessment and timely feedback to the postgraduate trainees working in a busy high volume chemical pathology laboratory. To achieve this, a workplace-based assessment (WBA) was introduced via Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in the curriculum, made possible with the help of SoTL grant by QTL_net at Aga Khan University, Pakistan. A multidisciplinary team was formulated with experts from the Departments of Pathology, Education, Medicine and Academic Computing, IT Solutions and Innovation at AKU. Chemical pathology specific WBA curricula were developed by experts and incorporated in VLE. Members of Chemical Pathology faculty (called Moodle Champs) were trained to deliver feedback to students via VLE and workshops by the IT team and FAIMER Fellows on the team. After implementation at AKU, feedback from faculty and PGs was collected by the project research associate. VLE enabled faculty to deliver real-time feedback to PGs in the clinical workplace, showing a marked improvement in the residents’ knowledge and satisfaction, evidenced by high post-test scores and improved positive workplace habits. Integrating VLE-based learning into the postgraduate program also proved effective during the COVID-19 crisis.
Congratulations to Dr. Jafri and Dr. Tariq for this well-deserved recognition of your work!
